“Imagillaboration” National Collaborative Sculpture Project
Working together for over a year, one hundred and six sculptors from twenty-six states collaborated in regional groups of five to nine artists in order to create a dynamic body of art. Each participant began an initial segment of a single sculpture (a seed piece), and then passed it on to the next member in the group in turn. In each phase of the cycle each sculptor had six weeks to discover and develop a suitable element to graft onto the work they had received. Ultimately, when the works had passed through the full group cycle, all the sculptors worked on all the pieces generated within that group aesthetic, resulting in one finished sculpture for each participating artist. The resulting body of work was curated into a traveling exhibition.
